What’s Happening?
The 2021 military coup in Myanmar has led to a growing humanitarian and displacement catastrophe. Since the coup, the number of people in Myanmar who need humanitarian assistance has skyrocketed, and the junta continues to hamper aid access. Meanwhile, fighting and renewed atrocities in Rakhine state have further diminished the prospects for the safe return of Rohingya refugees who fled genocide at the hands of the Myanmar military.
What Must Be Done?
International immigrants And Refugee Agency is calling for accountability for the Myanmar military’s abuses and for humanitarian assistance—including through cross-border support from Myanmar’s neighbors—to those fleeing for their lives. The United States must also support further global action in the form of coordinated targeted sanctions and an arms embargo.
